MATTER
- Matter is anything that has MASS (weighs something) and has VOLUME (takes up space)
- Matter is made of PARTICLES (very small bits)
- Depending on how these particles are arranged, matter can be a SOLID, LIQUID or GAS (or PLASMA but that's too hard)
Put a title in your book: Matter or not matter?
Rule up 2 columns in your books like so:
MATTER |
NOT MATTER |
GROUP ACTIVITY: Try and place the cards where you think they belong. Once the teacher has checked your answers, copy the correct answers into your book.
SOLIDS LIQUIDS AND GASES
EXPERIMENT: Burning candles
1. Light the tealight candle
2. After it has burnt for 10 seconds, blow it out. Immediately put a lit match near the wick (but not touching).
3. Put the lit tealight under a small beaker and start timing. Time how long it takes for the candle to burn out.
4. Repeat 3, but with a larger beaker.
5. Get a petri dish and put a longer lit candle in it. Place a medium jar over the top. When the flame goes out, try and lift the jar off.
5. Fill in the results sheet given to you by your teacher. Glue it into your book.

Check out this diagram!
Can you understand it?
In particular:
1. Why are there flat parts? What is happening to the particles in those parts?
2. What is each little dot/circle representing?
