A woman will need plastic surgery for serious burns and three other women were also injured, after they sat on public toilets smeared with a chemical in Christchurch early this morning. Three women had gone into the public toilets in Sydenham Park around 2am, Christchurch police Senior Sergeant Neru Leifi said. "It appears that a clear, gel-like substance had been smeared on the toilet seats, press-down buttons and on the building's walls," he said.
After using the toilets and suffering burns from the chemical, the women sought medical help. Two were treated and released, but the third was admitted to Christchurch Hospital and would need plastic surgery after receiving serious second and third degree burns, Mr Leifi said. There had also been a fourth female victim reported to police. "There may be others out there," he said.
The toilets were sealed off today while the Fire Service hazardous chemical response unit and police investigated. The toilets were open 24 hours, but there were no surveillance cameras in the area and witnesses were needed to catch whoever left the substance, Mr Leifi said. The chemical that caused the burns was still being identified. If a person had deliberately left it to injure others, they could face a range of serious charges, he said. "Whoever used this substance would need to have some knowledge of the toxic nature of it."

Has anyone got any ideas as to what the substance was?
